Member Help :: Getting Into Denali

Karim Nassar & Frank Wallingford, October 2002

This is the NAU Collaborative Computing Lab Linux server, Denali. It's named after one of Eck Doerry's favorite mountains. Note that:

  • Your account is the same as your dana login. The only way to log into the server is through SSH or a remote graphical login from the Unix Lab in room 137 as described on this page.

  • You are a member of the group mentioned in the email you recieved.

  • If you havent' done so, please remember to change your password. To do this, just type passwd at the console (If you don't the menie sys-admin might... :-).

Logging in

There are a few ways to use denali. You will not often have the chance to use the CCL facility itself, so you must work remotely most of the time. Fortunately, we have a nice network to facilitate this. The techniques available are described below.

  • Terminal logins
Denali supports terminal logins through ssh. If you were invited to use denali, you have a username and password you can use to log in. If you are in a unix environment, like dana, you can ssh to denali by typing this at the command line:

    # ssh denali.cse.nau.edu

The first time you do that, ssh will ask you if the host you are connecting to is one you trust. If you don't say 'yes', you won't be able to log in.

After putting in your password, you are in a shell just like if you were to telnet in. In fact, the only (major) difference between telnet and ssh is that ssh is much more secure.

If you are stuck in the winbloze world, get yer hot ssh shells here.

  • Alternate Terminal Login
You can also go to http://denali.cse.nau.edu/web-ssh. This is a java applet that has an ssh shell built into it, however this is not dependable and is likely not to work in many browsers.

  • Graphical logins
Denali is also set up so that you can log in graphically from the CET Sun computer lab. This method of logging in lets you use all of the programs on denali graphically. It would be the same as if you were sitting at the denali computer itself.

To do this, sit down (don't login) at a Sun station in room 137. The first thing you see before you log in to a Sun box is the "Welcome. Enter your username" window. Instead of putting your username here, follow these steps:

    • Click on the menu below that says Options and select Remote login->Enter Hostname.
    • Enter denali.cse.nau.edu
    • This will bring up denali's login window instead of dreadnought's. Enter your denali username and password.
    • Note: When you log in, you will be able to choose your desktop environment. GNOME, KDE, and IceWM are all installed for your graphical windowing pleasure.
    • If you must leave your session logged in, please use the xlock program to protect our computer (and your files) from malicious people.

Lastly, if you live off campus, you cannot access the remote graphical login without me adding your IP address to the "allowed" file. Let me know if you require this.
